When sixteen-year-old Brooke Bentley's green convertible and cell phone conk out during a tropical rainstorm, she believes it's just bad luck. But when she darts through the dark to a dilapidated Victorian she thinks is the home of a friend and is invited in by a butler wearing a faded black tux, Brooke knows it must be karma. Because how often do you meet a reclusive 1950's movie star who thinks she's actress Terry Moore? And how often does someone as charming as eighty-year-old Laura de France insist on turning you into a movie star, too?

I snagged a copy of Laura Kennedy's Double Take from my wife . She was surprised that I showed interest in reading the book, since it obviously chronicled the life of a teenage girl coming of age in a quaint Florida seaside town.

Once I started reading the work, I found that it spoke to me on multiple levels. As a male, it was intriguing to view these life challenges from the perspective of a young woman, and I suggest that the novel should not be stereotyped as a book for only females.

Brooke struggles with many of the issues confronting most young people. The need to fit in with her friends, while simultaneously learning to be independent, even if it means entering into the bizarre world of the aged Laura de France . Dealing with her own sexuality and the troubling infidelity of her mother. The contrasting worlds of the youthful Brooke and the controlling style of the aged Laura, lead to tensions that are both kind and manipulative .

The elderly Ms. de France is also on her own journey to find meaning in her life, even if it is achieved through the prism of Brooke's youth, and Laura's need to control and dominate Brooke , through acts of " generosity". Both ladies find common fascination with the glamorous times of Hollywood past, although Laura speaks from first hand experience.

The relationship is a complex and unorthodox one, and comes at a time when Brooke's life has plenty of other challenges. Somehow, both characters come out of their friendship for the better, although there are prices to be paid by both of them.

Laura's butler, James, is a marvelous character with intense loyalty and love for Ms. de France. He is blinded to her flaws, and perhaps much wiser than may first appear. While the work's plot is most interesting, it is the writer's development of these unique characters that makes it a compelling story.

This book reminds us that we are all , both young and old, on a journey to find meaning in our lives, and that quest takes on some turbulent moments when the worlds of Brooke and Laura collide .

Double Take Laura Kennedy 9781612357966 Books Reviews

Gets you into the story from the beginning. Liked the idea of the old house and the her reaction to the looks of it.
Great story with surprising twists and turns. One surprise was that I couldn't put the book down until I finished it. I don't have this kind of experience often enough.
This young adult novel is a fun read for adults as well. It's twists and turns make for excellent reading enjoyment.
Laura Kennedy's book Double Take takes the reader on a journey into the life of a sixteen year old girl, Brooke, who is offered a life that many teen girls long for. Teens will identify with the realistic situations and believable characters. Through Brooke's adventures, readers will learn a powerful life lesson.
Student review by V Bat, LitPick teen reviewer.

Double Take is a short, light read that somehow manages to perfectly capture a teen's struggle between restriction and autonomy. With realistic, likeable characters and multiple game-changing plot twists, the story keeps the reader engaged and excited.

My favorite part of the book is the elderly Laura de France, the fascinating character Brooke meets in the beginning of the story. Laura is a frail old lady, sweet friend and domineering career coach all at the same time. Her habits and history add something unique to the coming-of-age story template. The complexity of her character's behavior is what sets Double Take apart from the typical teen girl book.

A copy of this novel was given to LitPick in return for an objective review.
Reading Double Take, by Laura Kennedy, was like being a teenager, experiencing coming of age trials in a unique, fascinating situation. Though the story is meant for young adults, the references are nostalgic for us older readers. I recommend it for women of all ages.
A must read for adults as well. Using a totally unique framework for an exciting, interesting story, Laura reveals and stays true to her characters through great dialogue. Her weaving of "old" generation with "new" and a few interesting bits of trivia keeps the reader up beat and looking forward to the next page. The finale is truly a gem and in my mind this book is a master piece. I'm sure you'll enjoy it too.
